Neuropathology is the study of the structural and functional changes produced by diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, and the medium through which such diseases are recognized, investigated, characterized, and properly treated. It is therefore the indispensable link between basic neuroscience and clinical nervous system disease, and, as such, is the foundation for medical education across the many neuroscience disciplines.

At MSU, the neuropathology unit is committed to excellence in research, medical education, and clinical service, headed by Dr. Rudy Castellani, MD (http://www.ns.msu.edu/neurosci/people/faculty/castellani.htm). Our research focus centers on the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease, where we continue to investigate deleterious and protective molecular mechanisms of disease within the Alzheimer´s disease brain, and genetic and biochemical factors associated with clinicopathological features of prion diseases. To facilitate medical education, we house hundreds to thousands of glass slides comprising a wide array of neurological diseases, and thousands of digitized images of gross and microscopic lesions. We organize and implement regular neuropathology and neuro-oncology conferences for local residents, oncologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons.

For any neuropathology related questions or information on upcoming conferences, please contact Dr. Rudy Castellani, MD.
